Griff Tedd (1928-2007)

2007. december 8-án Griff Tedd emlékére platánfát ültettek a Kurca partján. A megjelent rokonokat, barátokat és ismerősöket Szabó Zoltán, Griff szentesi jó barátja üdvözölte.

On December 8th 2007 a Plane tree was planted near the river Kurca as a memorial and thanksgiving for the life of Griff Tedd. A speech was given by Zoltan Szabo, a good friend of Griff’s from Szentes.

Nagy tisztelettel köszönjük, hogy megjelentek itt ma, hogy együtt emlékezzünk Griff Teddre. Debbie, Griff felesége megkért, hogy mondjak pár szót Griff életéről.

We thank you all for gathering here today to remember the life of Griff Tedd. Debbie, Griff’s wife has asked me to say a few words about Griff’s life.

Griff Szentesen született 1928. augusztus 14-én. Az édesanyja aki magyar volt született Vranka Mária, az édesapja aki angol volt bizonyos Herberth Griffith. Az mindörökre titok maradt előttünk, hogy hogyan és hol találkoztak ők.

Griff was born in Szentes, a little town in the South East of Hungary on the 14th of August 1928. His mother who was Hungarian was Maria Vranka and his father who was English was Herbert Griffith. It was never discovered how and where they met.

Griff édesapja Görögországban dolgozott, ebből következik, hogy Griff első öt évét Görögországban élte, azaz beszélt görögül, magyarul és egy kicsit angolul. Ezután a szülei Angliába küldték, az Orient Expressen és beíratták egy bentlakásos iskolába Oxfordba. Ez az iskola hatása és befolyása határozta meg Griff életfilozófiáját a későbbi életében. 

 Griff's father worked in Greece and Griff spent the first five years of his life there and could speak Greek, Hungarian and only a little English! He was then sent to the U.K, travelling on the Orient Express, to attend The Dragon School, a boarding school in Oxford. This school proved to have a lasting influence on Griff and indeed this is where he gained his philosophy of life.

Egy olyan különleges iskolába járhatott, amely úgy fejlesztette ki a személyi felelősségérzetet és a praktikus gondolkodást, hogy nem nehéz szabálykönyveket, hanem a nyugodt, de mindenre kiterjedő tanítást helyezte előtérbe. Ezt a gondolkodásmódot a későbbiekben önök is tapasztalhatták Griffel való kapcsolatuk során.

It is a school which describes itself as having  a remarkable ethos that hinges on a robust informality and relaxed but disciplined approach which relies on common sense and individual responsibility rather than a weighty rulebook, and many of you will be able to see how this attitude was reflected through Griff.

1938-ig amikor is a szülei visszaköltöztek Angliába Devon megyébe, Griff csak az iskola szünetekben találkozhatott a szüleivel, ami már korán kifejlesztette benne az abszolút önellátást és függetlenséget.

Nagyobb térképre váltás

Until 1938, when his parents moved back to Devon, Griff only saw his parents during the school holidays which instilled a real sense of self-reliance and independence - a trait that many of you would have recognised in Griff.

Griff imádta a sportokat, különösen a hosszútávfutást; egy speciális versenyen a „Russell” futáson évekig tartotta az iskolarekordot. Érdekességképpen mezítláb futott, ahogy soha életében nem szeretett cipőt hordani. Ez a futam egyébként Dr. Jack Russellről lett elnevezve, aki után nevezték el a Jack Russell’s kutyákat.

Griff enjoyed doing sports, especially cross-country running and held the school record for many years for running the "Russell" race.This he did barefoot and he never much liked wearing shoes.

Amikor Griff befejezte az iskolát tisztként szol- gált a királyi fegyveres erőnél 2 évig. 100%-os tüzérvizsgát tett, és az egyik ujja hegyét leszakítot- ta az ágyú, amit szerencsére azonnal visszavarrtak. 

When Griff left school he became a commissioned officer in the Royal Artillery for two years, achieving 100% in a gunnery exam and also had a top of one of his fingers sliced off in a gun breach - luckily it was sewn back on sucessfully! 

Mikor leszerelt a hadseregtől 3 évet tanult állatorvosként, de sajnos nem tudta befejezni a tanulmányait.

 After leaving the Army Griff studied for three years to be a vet, but sadly he was unable to complete the course.

Griff első házasságából 5 gyermekkel áldotta meg az Isten: Jo, Simon, Judy, Baschea és Patrick.

Griff had five children from his first marriage and they are Jo, Simon, Judy, Baschea and Patrick.

Griff életében egyszer csak eljött az idő, amit ő „a férfi utolsó szabadságának” nevezett, hogy azzal a szenvedéllyel éljen tovább, ami a legfontosabb volt neki: a Tenger. A vicc kedvéért úgy hajózott, hogy úszás közben egy ideig nem merte a fejét a víz alá tenni. Később ezt kiheverte és megtanult búvárkodni Portugáliában. 

It was in the latter part of Griff's life that he was able to indulge in his real passion which was the sea. The sea according to Griff was the "last freedom allowed to man" despite the fact that he detested swimming and was afraid of putting his head under water! Later on he overcame that fear and trained as a sports scuba diver in Portugal. 

Amikor Griff elhatározta, hogy az élete hátralevő részét a tengeren tölti egy évig egy 7 méter hosszú vitorláson lakott a kikötőben. Ahogy ezt elmesélte: „a konyha asztal alatt lakott, ahonnan látta minden vagyonát és felét el is érte kézzel.” De rájött, hogy a helyes úton jár. Úgy gondolta nem elég képzett, hogy építsen hajót fából vagy fémből, ezért csinált magának egyet betonból.

When Griff first decided to spend a life at sea he lived aboard a 23 foot sailing boat for a year to see if he had made the right decision. He described that like living under the kitchen table where he could see all his posessions and certainly touch half of them. Not put off by this it was while he was working as a barman in "The Mermaid" inn on St.Marys in the Isles of Scilly that he conceived the idea of building his own vessel. As he thought he wasn't skilled enough to make one out of wood or steel he decided to construct a concrete one!

Miközben építette a hajót sokszor kifutott a pénzből vagy a lelkesedésből, ilyenkor munkát vállalt, yachtokat szállított le megrendelőknek vagy éppen az itthon vetített „Onedin család” című filmben annak a bizonyos hajónak ő volt az eredeti kapitánya.

Whilst building the boat when he ran out of money or enthusiam he would deliver yachts for other owners and even skippered one of the vessels used in the t.v. series "The Onedin Line". His claim to fame is the appearance of a grubby foot in one of the programnes! 

Néhány év sajátkezű munka után végül is vízre lehetett bocsátani a "Men-A-Vaur"-t, vagy ahogy ő nevezte a „Fekete Disznót” és megkezdte vándoréletét. Ő sohasem volt felkészületlen, mindig komoly előkészítést folytatott az utak előtt, kitűnő navigátor és rádió amatőr volt, hogy tudja tartani a kapcsolatot a többi hajóssal.

After several years of working practically single-handedly "Men-A-Vaur" or as she was affectionately known "The Black Pig" was launched and Griff embarked on his sea-gypsy life.He didn't sail unprepared-indeed he taught himself the art of astro-navigation-navigating using the sun and the stars and became a Ham radio operator which proved invaluable in trying to keep in contact with other sea-farers.

Ahogy Ti - Önök - ismerték Griffet, ő sohasem félt az új kihívásoktól, bevállalt egy nagy rizikót, felvenni a hajóra egy társat, Debbiet dél Spanyolországban 26 évvel ezelőtt.

As you all know Griff was never afraid of taking on new challenges and he added another to his list when he took the risk of "signing on" a ship-mate when he met Debbie in Southern Spain 26 years ago.

Ezután együtt dolgoztak mint kapitány és matróz. Motoros hajókon, vitorlásokon Portugáliában, Franciaországban, Spanyolországban.

They worked together as Captain and Mate on many different boats ,both motor and sail,in Spain, Portugal and France. 

Legizgalmasabb utuk volt, mikor átszelték az Atlanti Óceánt a saját hajójukkal, és közben eljutottak a Kanári-szigetre, a Karib-szigetekre, Venezuelába és úgy vissza Európába.

But their most exciting voyage was aboard "The Black Pig" when they crossed the Atlantic and visited the Canaries, the Caribbean Islands, Venezuela and the Azores before returning to Europe.

Miután visszajöttek, már idősebb korában megtanult számítógépezni és 58 évesen síelni is egy franciául írott könyvből.

On taking up another skippering job after this Griff decided to teach himself about computers and even learnt basic programning skills. He also took up ski-ing at the age of 58, learning from a book written in French! and soon became a competent and somewhat speedy skier.

Griff soha nem tudott megállni, ahogy visszavonult a tengeri élettől, azonnal egy lakókocsiba pattantak Debbievel és majd az összes országot bejárták Európában, beleértve Magyarországot is, ahol Griff született.

Griff continued to have the "wanderlust" and when it was time to retire from the sea he and Debbie continued their travels in a motor-home which took them to many countries including Hungary where Griff was born.

Ez egy igazán érdekes út volt, ahol Griff rájött, hogy fel kell térképeznie a családját. Griff sok rokonát megtalálta Szentesen és más városokban is. A Gálfi családot, a Tarjáni családot és a Csernus családot.

This trip kindled a new interest for Griff which was family tree research and many a skeleton was found in long -forgotten cupboards! Griff also discovered many living relatives in Szentes and other towns, including the Galfi, Csernus-Lukacs and Tarjani families. 

Griff teljesen elfelejtette a magyar nyelvet, rengeteg időt töltöttek a helyi kultúra megismerésével, sok barátot gyűjtöttek és egyúttal eltervezték, hogy 1997-ben letelepednek Szentesen.

Despite the language problem, Griff had forgotten all his Hungarian, they spent alot of time in Hungary and decided to buy a small house here where they immersed themselves in the local life and culture and made many wonderful friends.

Azt hiszem, Griffet úgy őrizzük emlékeinkben, mint egy jó barátot, aki egy szabad gondolkodású, kiváló humorérzékű, idejét és tudását másoknak átadni nem sajnáló ember. Utolsó kívánsága az volt, hogy mosolyogva, és ne könnyekkel emlékezzünk rá.

Griff has been described by many of his friends as a "free spirit" and this is true but he will also be remembered for his great sense of humour and generosity in giving his time and his willingness to pass on his knowledge and his wisdom so that others could benefit. He would like you to remember him with a smile and not a tear.

Gálfi László, Griff unokatestvére elmesélte, mikor és hogyan találkoztak először 1997-ben, és annak ellenére, hogy nem ismerik egymás anyanyelvét kapcsolatot tudtak teremteni. Hosszú baráti beszélgetésekre kerítettek sort. Elmesélte azt is, hogyan segített Debbienek és Griffnek otthont találni Szentesen.

A few words were spoken by a cousin, Laszlo Galfi, about how and when he first met Griff in 1997 and that despite the fact that neither of them knew each other's language they still managed to communicate, though conversations would take a long time!, and how Laszlo helped Griff and Debbie find the house that they bought.

Majd egy rövid beszéd erejéig szót kért Csernus-Lukács István, Griff másik unokatestvére, aki Pestről busszal érkezett emlékünnepségre. Elmesélte, kisgyermek koruk után körülbelül 50 évvel hogyan találkoztak újra Griffel. Felidézte azokat a nyári szünidőket, melyet Griffel a nagymamánál töltöttek kiskorukban. Magával hozott egy 1930-as évekből való fotót, melyen az egész család meg van örökítve a családi ház kertjében.

Then a short speech was given by Istvan Csernus–Lukacs, another cousin who had travelled by bus from Budapest, to attend the ceremony. He told the story of how he remet Griff in Szentes after a gap of about fifty years. He remembered meeting Griff as a young boy during the summer holidays when Griff used to visit Hungary with his mother to see relatives. He even produced a photograph of them together, along with other family members in the family garden, taken in the 1930’s.

Ezután Debbie, Griff felesége magyarul olvasott fel - egyebek mellett a következőket: „Angol emberként gondolkozom, de a szívem mindig Magyarországon van.” Majd ezután elültetésre került a platánfa a Kurca partján, mely előtt egy emléktábla található Griff tiszteletére.

Griff’s wife Debbie then gave a speech in Hungarian-translated as follows:

           Kedves egybegyűltek! - Welcome everyone!

Először szeretnék köszönetet mondani barátainknak, akik csatlakoztak, hogy emlékezzünk Griffre. 

First of all I would like to thank all those friends who are gathered here today to celebrate the life of Griff.

Griff szeretett mesélni a barátainak a régi emlékeiről, amit Szentesen élt át gyermekként. Három dolog volt, amire a legjobban emlékezett gyerekkorából:

Griff liked to recall to his friends here ,some of his earliest memories of his life in Szentes and three events are brought to mind:

 az emlékezetes gyermekkori játék, amikor a családjának a szentesi téglagyárában csillével játszott; He vividly remembered playing and riding in the little railway trucks in the family–owned brick factory here in town;

 nagyon várta a Mikulást minden év december 6-án, hiányolta a csoki mikulást, és hogy Angliában nem teheti ki a cipőjét az ablakba; He remembered putting his shoes on the window sill every December the sixth to be filled hopefully with chocolate, a present from Mikulas (Father Christmas) - Griff regretted the fact that this tradition doesn’t exist in England;

 és az egyetlen magyar kifejezés, amit az édesanyja mondogatott, amikor mérges volt, de azt inkább nem említem most; One phrase of Hungarian that he did remember was one that his mother used when she was angry but I won’t repeat it now!

Gondolom, elcsodálkoztok rajta, hogy egy ember, aki imádta a tengert, miért döntött úgy, hogy a tengerpart nélküli Magyarországon telepszik le, de Griff és én is meleg, családias fogadtatásban részesültünk Szentesen. 

You may wonder why a man who loved the sea decided to settle in a land-locked country such as Hungary but both Griff and I were made to feel so welcome and shown such hospitality that it felt like „home”. 

Griff-et mindig is érdekelte Szentes városa és lakosai. Azt mondta a fiataloknak, hogy „Ha nincsenek álmaid, hogyan válhatnak valóra!” vagyis ha követed álmaid elérheted azt az életben, amit valójában akarsz.

Griff was always interested in the town of Szentes and its people. He used to say, especially to the young, „If you don’t have dreams – then how can they come true?” in other words one can achieve something in life if you really want to.

Amint tudjátok Griff nagyon büszke volt a magyar származására. Amikor megkérdezték tőle, hogy magyarnak vagy angolnak érzi magát, ő mindig azt válaszolta: „Angol emberként gondolkozom, de a szívem mindig Magyarországon van.” 

Griff was always very proud of his Hungarian roots. When asked if he felt Hungarian or English he would always reply: ”My head is in England but my heart is in Hungary.”

Még egyszer megköszönöm az itt megjelenteknek, hogy eljöttek, és remélem a platánfa ültetésével Griff hosszan tovább él a szívünkben.

I thank you all again for being here and I hope that with the planting of this Plane tree Griff’s memory will remain in our hearts forever. Thank you.

The tree was then planted alongside the river Kurca and a plaque with an inscription to Griff was placed next to the tree.

Ezután Szabó Zoltán John Masefield: Sea Fever című versét olvasta fel, melyben a költő szavaival élve Griff a halállal hazatér a tengerhez. Griff nemcsak a tengerhez, hanem Magyarországhoz is visszatért. 

Zoltan Szabo then read the poem „Sea Fever” by John Masefield. 

Sea-Fever

 

I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,

And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,

And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,

And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.

 

I must down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide

Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;

And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,

And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

A megjelent rokonok, barátok és ismerősök virágokat helyeztek el és mécseseket gyújtott az emlékfánál. Debbie köszönetet mondott mindazon nagyszerű embereknek, akik segítették az ünnepélyes megemlékezést.

Flowers and lit candles were placed by the tree for Griff by seventy of his friends who attended. Debbie would like to thank all those wonderful and supportive friends who made this ceremony possible.
