Griff Tedd (1928-2007)

2007. december 8-án Griff Tedd emlékére platánfát ültettek a Kurca partján. A megjelent rokonokat, barátokat és ismerősöket Szabó Zoltán, Griff szentesi jó barátja üdvözölte.

On December 8th 2007 a Plane tree was planted near the river Kurca as a memorial and thankgiving for the life of Griff Tedd. Speech given by Zoltan Szabo, a good friend of Griff’s from Szentes.

Gálfi László, Griff unokatestvére elmesélte, mikor és hogyan találkoztak először 1997-ben, és annak ellenére, hogy nem ismerik egymás anyanyelvét kapcsolatot tudtak teremteni. Hosszú baráti beszélgetésekre kerítettek sort. Elmesélte azt is, hogyan segített Debbienek és Griffnek otthont találni Szentesen.

A few words were spoken by a cousin, Laszlo Galfi, about how and when he first met Griff in 1997 and that despite the fact that neither of them knew each other's language they still managed to communicate, though conversations would take a long time!, and how Laszlo helped Griff and Debbie find the house that they bought.

Majd egy rövid beszéd erejéig szót kért Csernus-Lukács István, Griff másik unokatestvére, aki Pestről busszal érkezett emlékünnepségre. Elmesélte, kisgyermek koruk után körülbelül 50 évvel hogyan találkoztak újra Griffel. Felidézte azokat a nyári szünidőket, melyet Griffel a nagymamánál töltöttek kiskorukban. Magával hozott egy 1930-as évekből való fotót, melyen az egész család meg van örökítve a családi ház kertjében.

Then a short speech was given by Istvan Csernus–Lukacs, another cousin who had travelled by bus from Budapest, to attend the ceremony. He told the story of how he remet Griff in Szentes after a gap of about fifty years. He remembered meeting Griff as a young boy during the summer holidays when Griff used to visit Hungary with his mother to see relatives. He even produced a photograph of them together, along with other family members in the family garden, taken in the 1930’s.

Ezután Debbie, Griff felesége magyarul olvasott fel - egyebek mellett a következőket: „Angol emberként gondolkozom, de a szívem mindig Magyarországon van.” Majd ezután elültetésre került a platánfa a Kurca partján, mely előtt egy emléktábla található Griff tiszteletére.

Griff’s wife Debbie then gave a speech in Hungarian-translated as follows: ”... My head is in England but my heart is in Hungary...” The tree was then planted alongside the river Kurca and a plaque with an inscription to Griff was placed next to the tree.

Ezután Szabó Zoltán John Masefield: Sea Fever című versét olvasta fel, melyben a költő szavaival élve Griff a halállal hazatér a tengerhez. Griff nemcsak a tengerhez, hanem Magyarországhoz is visszatért. 

Zoltan Szabo then read the poem „Sea Fever” by John Masefield. 

"...I must down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,

To the gull's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife..."

A megjelent rokonok, barátok és ismerősök virágokat helyeztek el és mécseseket gyújtott az emlékfánál. Debbie köszönetet mondott mindazon nagyszerű embereknek, akik segítették az ünnepélyes megemlékezést.

Flowers and lit candles were placed by the tree for Griff by seventy of his friends who attended. Debbie would like to thank all those wonderful and supportive friends who made this ceremony possible.
